OSLO, Norway - Stabaek and Vaalerenga officials have been arrested in a fraud investigation centered on former Iceland striker Veigar Pall Gunnarsson's transfer between the two Norwegian clubs.
Police say the clubs illicitly structured the deal to lower French club Nancy's share of the transfer sum. Gunnarsson left Nancy for Stabaek in 2009 and transferred to Vaalerenga in July.
Vaalerenga sporting director Truls Haakonsen and Stabaek counterpart Inge Andre Olsen were arrested on suspicion of breach of trust.
Police prosecutor Morten Stene says both deny wrongdoing and have been released after questioning.
Stabaek claims it has settled the matter with Nancy, but Stene says there is still cause for a criminal investigation.
