LOS ANGELES (AP) ? A farewell note left behind by the Santa Monica gunman expressed remorse for the killing of his father and brother but provided no explanation for the rampage that left them and three others dead.

Police Chief Jacqueline Seabrooks said that the three- to four-page handwritten note was found on John Zawahri's body after he was shot and killed June 7 by officers on the campus of Santa Monica College.

The 23-year-old Zawahri also used the note to say goodbye to friends and expressed hope that his mother would be taken care of and receive recompense from his father's estate.

investigators believe mental illness played a role in the killings, Seabrooks said at a news conference Thursday.

"We know his was a troubled life and that he experienced mental health challenges," Seabrooks said. "We believe that his mental health challenges likely played a role in his decisions to shoot and kill both his father and his brother, to set fire to the family home, and to go on a 13-minute shooting spree spanning roughly 1.5 miles and which left five innocent people dead and three people injured."

Zawahri apparently built his own .223-caliber assault rifle, using it to shoot his father and brother before he set fire to their family home, officials said earlier Thursday.

Zawahri's mother was out of the country visiting family in Lebanon during Friday's rampage but cut short her trip and returned home Sunday. She has been interviewed by detectives.

Seabrooks said the semi-automatic weapon appears to have been built with component parts that are legal to obtain, but put together make the rifle illegal in California.

She said he also modified an antique black-powder .44 revolver so that it could hold .45-caliber ammunition; it was loaded during the shooting and he carried it with him in a duffel bag.

Zawahri's rampage ended when police killed him in the Santa Monica College library Friday. To get there, he had carjacked a woman, directing her to the college and having her stop so he could fire at vehicles and strangers. Police still did not know why he chose to go to the college, why he targeted those killed or why he chose that day.

Santa Monica police plan to work with the FBI to understand Zawahri's psychological makeup and motivation, Seabrooks said.

Officials said Thursday that the fire at Zawahri's father's home, which erupted soon after neighbors heard shots fired, was intentionally set.

An official, who was not authorized to speak publicly and spoke on condition of anonymity, said the fires were started in a front living room and atop one of two twin beds in another room. Several boxes of matches were also found in the bedroom.

Firefighters found the bodies of the gunman's father and brother in a back bedroom that was uninvolved in the blaze. The house was found unkempt with files and papers scattered throughout, providing ample kindling.

In Zawahri's bedroom, investigations found illegal zip guns, Seabrooks said. They also found ample evidence of his fascination with weapons, including four replica airsoft pellet guns, knives and gun magazines, said Sgt. Richard Lewis. Investigators also found materials that indicate he likely assembled the weapon.

Police said Zawahri bought a lower receiver that was only 80 percent complete. Because it is not complete and not considered a full weapon, a person isn't required to go through a background check to get one, nor does the part need to have a serial number.

Though Zawahri fired about 100 rounds during the rampage, police said he was carrying 1,300 rounds of ammunition in magazines that were capable of holding 30 rounds each. Such high-capacity magazines are illegal to purchase, sell or transfer in California. Possession is not illegal. He also had a spare upper receiver and the antique revolver with him in a duffel bag.

Zawahri's last reported contact with law enforcement was seven years ago, when bomb-making materials were found at his house during a search prompted by threats to students, teachers and campus police officers at Olympic High, a school for students with academic or disciplinary issues.

The Santa Monica-Malibu school board was briefed at the time by school administrators after police found Zawahri was learning to make explosives by downloading instructions from YouTube, school board member Oscar de la Torre said.

Retired police officer Cristina Coria, who helped serve the search warrant, said Zawahri was hospitalized for psychiatric evaluation at the time. She didn't know the outcome of the evaluation.

Police declined to provide further details, saying Zawahri was a minor at the time. But once a person is held for such an exam, they cannot access or possess firearms for five years.

In the case of Zawahri, that prohibition would have expired in 2011.

Police said Thursday that in 2011, Zawahri tried to buy a weapon but was denied by the California Department of Justice, likely because of that 2006 incident.

Despite that denial, Seabrooks said, Zawahri was able to buy the component parts to build his own weapon and obtain an array of magazines.

Santa Monica police said they will work with the ATF to understand how he came to possess these gun components, Seabrooks said.

Pope Francis and new Anglican leader meet, note differences

VATICAN CITY (Reuters) - Pope Francis and the new head of the world's Anglicans acknowledged deep differences over issues ranging from gay rights to women priests but pledged to seek unity when they met on Friday for the first time since both took office in March.

Relations between the Catholic and Anglican churches have been strained for years, especially over Anglican ordination of women as priests, and the meeting at the Vatican was billed as an opportunity to reduce tensions.

Welcoming Archbishop of Canterbury Justin Welby to the Vatican, Francis called for Christians to work together to protect the "foundations of society" such as respect for human life and the institution of the family built on marriage.

Francis was inaugurated as the leader of the world's 1.2 billion Catholics on March 19, following Benedict's abdication, and just two days before Welby officially took over from Rowan Williams as head of the 80-million-strong Anglican Communion.

Welby said on Friday he hoped the proximity of the two leaders' inaugurations would "serve the reconciliation of the world and the Church", while noting the difficulties ahead.

"The journey is testing and we cannot be unaware that differences exist about how we bring the Christian faith to bear on the challenges thrown up by modern society," he said.

Anglican ordination of women is a thorny issue between the two Churches, with the Vatican firmly opposed to female priests, and attempts by Francis' predecessor Benedict to woo disaffected Anglicans back to Catholicism has caused more friction.

In 2009, Benedict decreed that Anglicans who feel their Church had become too liberal could find a home in Catholicism in a parallel hierarchy that allows them to keep some of their traditions, such as parts of the Anglican liturgy and the Anglican Book of Common Prayer.

It was the boldest step by the Vatican to welcome back Anglicans since King Henry VIII broke with Rome and set himself up at the head of the new Church of England in 1534.

Francis said on Friday he was sure the move would help the Catholic world to better appreciate and understand the spiritual and pastoral traditions of the Anglican community.

Welby, a former oil industry executive, has inherited a Church which is itself divided over issues such as gay rights and women bishops. He is against gay marriage but favors female ordination, and is stuck in the crossfire between liberal and conservative clerics.

In January this year, the Church of England lifted a ban on gay male clergy who live with their partners from becoming bishops on condition they pledge to stay celibate, deepening a rift in the Anglican community over homosexuality.

The Church, struggling to remain relevant in modern Britain despite falling numbers of believers, published a plan in May to approve the ordination of women bishops by 2015, after the reform narrowly failed to pass last November.

Welby, a pragmatist hardened by years of work as a crisis negotiator in Africa, is seen as more down-to-earth than his academic predecessor. In that way he presents a similar image to Francis, who led an ordinary life close to the poor as Archbishop of Buenos Aires.

On Friday both men stressed the need for Christians to help poor people and promote social justice and peace.

After addressing the pope and Vatican officials, Welby went on to pray at the tomb of Saint Peter under St. Peter's Basilica.

Fans can be so demanding! Particularly if they're only 18 months old and haven't quite figured out yet that the hero on the screen is a fictional construct played by an all-too-human actor.

Welcome to Jaxson Denno's world. When the toddler's mom Heather discovered Robert Downey Jr. was filming "The Judge" near their Western Massachusetts hometown, she brought her son to the set and told him he was going to meet Iron Man.

And then he met a guy in jeans and a V-neck short-sleeved shirt -- who had actually shaved.

Denno told Boston.com, "I said to my son, 'Hey, here's Iron Man,' but he didn't have the red suit on so Jaxson put his hands over his face and got upset."

Click! went Mom's camera, and an iconic photo was created.

Still, Downey didn't take it too hard, said Denno. "He was amazing," she said. "You could tell he was a father. He was so sweet and nurturing."

Early data from first human study suggests radiation-antibody combination is safe

June 10, 2013 ? An experimental treatment that combines a cell-killing radioactive particle with an antibody that homes in on cancer cells is safe in the treatment of cancers spreading through patients' abdomens, according to data from a first-in-human study presented today at the Society of Nuclear Medicine and Molecular Imaging annual meeting in Vancouver.

The results are from an ongoing phase I clinical trial at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) designed to measure the safety of the treatment as opposed to its effectiveness. When complete, the study will have treated 18 patients with a combination of the FDA-approved antibody-based cancer treatment Herceptin (trastuzumab) and the radioactive material lead-212. At the time of the presentation, eight of the 18 had received treatment, and fully analyzed data will be presented for three patients.

The Herceptin antibody attaches itself to the HER-2 protein, which occurs more often on cancer cell surfaces, to stop signals that encourage cancerous growth. In theory, radioactive material attached to the antibody should cut up DNA in HER-2-positive cancer cells, causing them to self-destruct.

"By killing cancer cell by cell, our approach promises to be useful against metastases that have spread along the lining of the abdomen," said Ruby Meredith, M.D., Ph.D., professor in the UAB Department of Radiation Oncology and a senior scientist in the UAB Comprehensive Cancer Center. "So far we have only preliminary data in a few patients. Should further studies prove this combination treatment to be safe and effective, however, it could be useful against the forty percent of HER-2 expressing ovarian and gastric cancers, while sparing normal tissues."

In this preliminary analysis, the study treatment neither built up in organs and nor destroyed the bone marrow's ability to make blood cells -- problems that limited the dose in past attempts to combine antibodies and radioisotopes. Given the safety demonstrated in the first group of patients, and in keeping with U.S. Food and Drug Administration guidelines, the plan is now to raise the dose in the next group of patients according to approved protocol.

A long search Alpha particle experiments go back to the 1960s, with several researchers, including Martin Brechbiel at the National Cancer Institute, combining alpha emitters with antibodies as early as the late 1980s.

Radioactive materials have unstable atomic structures that cause them to shed high-energy particles in a process called decay at fixed rates measured in half-lives, the time it takes for half of a quantity of material to become stable. Among the first decay processes discovered were alpha and beta decay, which emit different kinds of high-energy, subatomic building blocks.

With an average half-life of 6.7 days, beta emitters looked to be more useful at first. They remained radioactive long enough to be shipped and introduced into patients. They passed through thousand cells before coming to a halt, suggesting they could kill many cancer cells inside large tumors. On the downside, they came with sustained, off-target radiation exposure that dramatically limited their safe dose.

The field had long discussed using alpha emitters instead because they strike nearby cells with greater power, have shorter half-lives for less off-target exposure and penetrate just a few cells before coming to a halt. Unfortunately, the first alpha emitters identified had inappropriate half-lives and were tricky and expensive to produce.

Enter study sponsor AREVA Med, the company that built a system for consistent delivery of pure radium-224 that decays into lead-212 in the time it takes to ship it to any hospital in the world (about 36 hours). Lead-212 is not an alpha emitter, but decays into bismuth-212 which emits alpha particles and then becomes inert within an hour of being introduced to the body. According to the data so far, this spares bone marrow, organs and normal cells.AREVA Med asked UAB to undertake the current study because of Meredith's clinical trial expertise within the UAB cancer center.

The trial was open to all patients with HER-2 positive cancer, but seven out of the first eight patients happened to have ovarian cancer. All patients underwent extra rounds of imaging to ensure that the radioactivity stayed in the abdomen, close to where metastases occur around primary gastric and ovarian tumors. Researchers watched for signs of long-term toxicity for six months after treatment, but found none. Patients in the study had failed on previous therapies.

Along with Meredith, Sui Shen, Ronda Carlise, Patty Bunch, Souheil Saddekni, Daniel Yoder and Ronald Alvarez at UAB , as well as Julien Torgue and Eileen Banaga at AREVA Med, were study authors. The study was sponsored by AREVA Med and a grant from the National Institutes of Health to the UAB Center for Clinical and Translational Science (1UL1RR025777). Herceptin was provided for the trial by Genentech.

Xbox One at E3 2013: Games, More Games and the Price

We know what the Xbox One looks like. We know how powerful the new Kinect is. We know how the new controller feels. We know what the guts are. Hell, we even know what we're going to complain about with the Xbox One already. What we don't know? How the games will look. Or how they'll play. Or what they'll be. We find out today.

Microsoft is holding its E3 media event at The Galen Center in Los Angeles which usually plays home to USC's less than stellar basketball team. It's packed in here. It's very green in here. And the crowd seems pretty pumped to see some video games from the console that's being accused of not caring about video games. It's the kickoff event for E3 2013, let's hope we see something good.

Video Games

The first game shown for the Xbox One was Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain, which looks absolutely fantastic. From my view up top, when Snake was riding his horse (he can ride a horse?), I thought it was a Game of Thrones clip. It's still sneaky but seems a bit more open.

If you want something fresh, a new video game franchise shown was Ryse: Son of Rome. It's a beautiful swords and sandals type video game where you kill bad guys in the name of Rome. Or something like that It's exclusive to Xbox One and the graphics were just as good as any movie starring Russell Crowe or Brad Pitt or Gerard Butler. It's an Xbox One game, not a Kinect game as originally teased a few years ago.

If you loved Killer Instinct, it's back and an exclusive for Xbox One. If you love Minecraft, that'll also be available on the Xbox One.

Forza Motorsport 5 is coming out too (like you didn't expect that) with a slick new feature that smartens up AI drivers. Called 'Driveatar', the game learns your driving style and habits and adjusts the AI drivers accordingly. The 'Driveatars' will be put on the cloud so that you can race fake real people instead of fake AI opponents.

Dead Rising 3 is also coming as an exclusive, you can use SmartGlass to call in an artillery strike against zombies if you so choose.

An interesting game called Project Spark utilizes Kinect and SmartGlass to basically let you play God. You can use voice commands to Kinect and touch controls on the SmartGlass to build entire worlds, players, enemies and so forth. It's a game maker game.

And Halo! Made by 343 Industries, Halo is coming to the Xbox One in 2014. The teaser showed Master Chief in rags in the snow. Halo for the Xbox One will run in 60FPS.

SmartGlass, Video Game DVR and Live Broadcasts

SmartGlass has some new tricks: it keeps track of your progress throughout a game and has a new match up feature that finds gamers more suited to your skill level.

A neat feature for show off gamers is Upload Studio which lets gamers upload, edit and personalize any video game clip to share. You can add commentary with Kinect and use skins to make it all look so very polished.

Microsoft also announced a partnership with Twitch which enables Xbox One gamers to broadcast their video games for everyone to see. It's the benefit of always being connected to the Internet, I guess!

Pricing

The Xbox One will cost $500 and release in November.

Xbox Live

Microsoft announced that existing Xbox Live customers will get two free games per month. The first two free games are Assassin's Creed and Halo 3.

Like an aging celebrity getting more Botox, another facelift and surgery to delay gravity's inevitable doom, Microsoft announced that the Xbox 360 is getting another design refresh. It's supposed to take design cues from the Xbox One, which means it's just a nice looking black box. It's available today. Only buy it if you hate yourself or your kids. In addition, Microsoft is showing three games for the Xbox 360 at E3 2013. Don't ask me why.

Sony's Google TV box gets a refresh, NSZ-GS8 adds voice search ready remote

Sony has just announced a new Google TV set-top box, the NSZ-GS8. Apparently replacing last year's NSZ-GS7 that lead the charge of second generation ARM-powered Google TV hardware, this one appears to be quite similar. As seen in the picture above (check after the break to see the old remote for comparison) it adds a microphone this time around, necessary to enable the voice search features added to the Google TV platform last fall. We're not seeing any other changes, but we'll let you know if we hear of any differences. In lieu of actual new devices, Google TV fans can at least take heart that Sony is continuing development on the platform -- good to hear after the NSZ-GP9 Blu-ray player that was also announced last year ended up being cancelled prior to its release. Like its predecessor, the NSZ-GS8 carries a sticker price of $199 and should reach stores by early July.
