Instagram Designer Tim Van Damme moving to Dropbox in early August

Instagram Designer Tim Van Damme moving to Dropbox

Ready to tackle new challenges and experiences, Tim Van Damme, the Lead Designer for Instagram, will be leaving the Facebook-acquired company to join up with Dropbox. Van Damme has a healthy track record, having designed for Instagram since January of 2012, as well as Gowalla and TenForce prior to that time. He'll join former Facebook designers Rasmus Andersson and Soleio Cuervo in his new position starting in early August; in the meantime, he'll be taking a few weeks off, though we wonder if he'll be sharing any pictures of his vacation or the amazing food on you-know-what.

Cartel leader 'captured' in Mexico

Miguel Angel Trevino Morales, head of the brutal Zetas drug cartel, has been captured in northern Mexico, the Mexican government has confirmed.

Trevino Morales, known as "Zeta-40", was captured outside Nuevo Laredo, near the US border at dawn on Monday.

He took control of the Zetas following the death of group founder Heriberto Lazcano in October 2012.

Correspondents say his capture is a triumph for authorities battling the powerful drug-trafficking cartels.

The Zetas were formed by defectors from a Mexican elite police unit and quickly became infamous for their brutality, which included the beheadings of kidnapped migrants and rival gang members.

Analysis

The government of Enrique Pena Nieto has said that its strategy on the drug war would involve a shift away from high profile arrests towards a broader reduction of violence on Mexico's streets. For every drug cartel leader who is captured, the government has said, there is another to take his place.

But, nevertheless, they will be privately overjoyed at bringing down such an important drug lord as Trevino Morales - especially without even having fired a shot.

Unlike other top members of the Zetas, Trevino Morales did not come from the military. But he appeared to make up for his civilian background by specialising in a particularly sadistic form of violence against his victims.

The group split in 2010, sparking brutal turf wars in the north of the country.

Notorious

Trevino Morales was detained in countryside 27km (17 miles) south-west of Nuevo Laredo, government spokesman Eduardo Sanchez told a news conference on Monday night.

Marines stopped a pick-up truck containing $2m (?1.3m) in cash and Trevino Morales was taken into custody along with a bodyguard, an accountant and eight guns, he said.

Mr Sanchez said marines had had the area under surveillance.

Unlike the military defectors in the cartel, "Z-40" was a civilian who worked his way up through the Zetas after they broke away from their original paymasters, the Gulf Cartel, and began running drug-trafficking operations themselves, says the BBC's Will Grant in Mexico City.

He is believed to be responsible for carrying out several notorious attacks involving particularly sadistic violence including the torture and murder of 72 Central American immigrants in San Fernando in the northern state of Tamaulipas.

Miguel Angel Trevino Morales

  • Began life of crime as a teenager running errands for Los Tejas gang, based in his home town of Nuevo Laredo, but soon graduated to cross-border drug-running
  • Joined the Gulf cartel in mid-1990s and became notorious for brutal murders involving burning his victims to death
  • Began the push for Zetas' split from the Gulf cartel in 2007, and became overall Zetas leader in 2012
  • US authorities put out $5m reward for information leading to his capture
  • Charged with ordering the kidnapping and killing of 265 migrants in two massacres, among other offences

He was also blamed for another atrocity a year later in which nearly 200 immigrants were massacred.

Before he became the group's overall leader, Trevino Morales co-ordinated the gang's important Nuevo Laredo drug corridor into the United States - the region in which he was finally apprehended.

This is undoubtedly the highest profile and successful drug lord capture to date for the administration of President Enrique Pena Nieto, our correspondent says.

But as with most arrests of drug lords, there are often a number of possible successors to his throne.

The fear is that it will lead to a period of violent in-fighting between different Zeta factions as they try to assume control of the criminal organisation, our correspondent adds.

EU regulators say Google must improve its antitrust concession offer

The European Union's antitrust chief, Joaquin Almunia, told a news conference today that the commission had deemed Google's recent concession offer insufficient. According to a Reuters report, Almunia has written a letter directly to Eric Schmidt demanding that the company "present better proposals", following the antitrust inquiry into Google's search and page ranking behavior. "After an analysis of the market test that was concluded on June 27, I concluded that the proposals that Google sent to us are not enough to overcome our concerns."

?

These changes, which would be enacted in the next five years, included more labelling of links that promote Googles own search services (like shopping), along the lines of showing that they are promoted placements. There would also be more graphical separation of the above links -- again, like how you see promoted ads in the search results page. The company would also offer the ability for rival search sites to tag their results so that Google would be unable to improve its own search offering by indexing those pages. Given other recent issues between Google and some European countries, the proposals also touched on offering a way for publishers to control exactly what part of their content is used in Google News.

?

The search giant's proposals were handed to the European Commission back in April, following its three-year investigation, with the regulator involving both Google's rivals and third parties in its decision-making process. We've reached out to Mountain View for comment and will tell you more when we hear it, and you can check out some of those rejected proposals at the More Coverage link.

Ramp Up Your Trade Show Marketing: PR Opportunities Abound ...

Make sure your trade booth staffers are on the lookout for media representatives and familiar with the schedule of media appointments.

Make sure your trade booth staffers are on the lookout for media representatives and familiar with the schedule of media appointments.

Trade shows are an important component of most companies? marketing initiatives. While participating in the show expo can be a valuable way to connect with customers and prospects at local and national levels, the promotional opportunities afforded by the event extend way beyond the exhibit booth. Boost your company?s return on investment and marketing success with a well-planned public relations effort to gain significant editorial coverage before, during and after the event.

    Before the event

Start with pre-event publicity to maximize interest in and coverage of your activities through press releases, media alerts, invitations, and your company?s web site, newsletters and social media programs. Also take advantage of all the opportunities offered by trade show management, such as access to media lists and coverage in the event?s newsletter, show guide, website and social media.

Find out whether the show needs keynote speakers, panel discussion participants, presenters or authors of conference papers. Secure one of these opportunities for your business leaders and you?ll strengthen your industry reputation. Plus, you?ll form relationships with the trade editors, who will come to think of you as thought leaders and industry experts. Each speaking engagement offers the opportunity to send editorial advisories ahead of the event.

For editorial briefings, you will need a press kit to leave with the editors you meet with, to send to those with whom we?re unable to visit, and to leave in the press room of the trade show. Contents could include press releases, backgrounders, fact sheets, images and other supporting materials. In addition to print documents in a pocket folder, your press kit should be made available electronically, either on a branded CD or jump drive. If the trade show?s website has a virtual newsroom, upload your press kit there.

Begin your outreach at least two weeks prior to the event to set up on-site interviews, schedule visits to your exhibit and invite editors to your speaking engagements. Also consider activities to develop meaningful relationships with editors, such as inviting some of them to your company-sponsored seminars or hospitality events at the show. Hosting a media dinner at one of your marquee events is another possible media relations activity that will benefit you and your company for years to come. This will enable your executives to interact with editors who are important to your organization, to thank them for their past coverage and to present some highlights of your company?s recent developments.

    During the event

The day before the event opens, drop off your press kits at the press room and your exhibit booth. Make sure your trade booth staffers are on the lookout for media representatives and familiar with the schedule of media appointments. Also provide them a list of all media registered for the show and details on how to contact you when a media representative stops by.

When you?re not busy coordinating press interviews or meeting with editors at company-sponsored activities, look for opportunities to engage media representatives by attending the show?s networking events or by visiting their magazine?s exhibit booth. If possible read the magazines and review editorial calendars before your meetings so you have a feel for the tone and editorial focus. Take the time to listen to their objectives for the year and then suggest ideas on how you can help by participating in their staff-written articles and/or contributing by-lined features, testimonials or other types of editorial materials.

    After the event

Following the event, you?ll want to evaluate your media relations strategy and pinpoint the deliverables for immediate and future publicity. Send out a press release on your speaking engagement, look for ways to repurpose your conference paper into a feature article, and follow up on editorial commitments that you secured at the show. Also continue the coverage on your website, newsletters and social media by posting your presentation, speech and videos of exhibit hall interviews and announcements. Keep on top of all these opportunities and your efforts will reap the benefits in valuable short-term and long-term media exposure for your company.

6 Ways to Toddler-Proof Your Gadgets

Living with a toddler is like watching a rogue country develop weapons of mass destruction. One day, you think your 1-year-old couldn't possibly enrich uranium on his own and the next he's learned ?how to pull your smartphone out of the nightstand drawer, turn the TV off while you're watching it and grab a $500 tablet off your desk, just to bang it on the floor.

Recently, a 14-month old in Oregon bought a vintage car on eBay when she grabbed her father's phone, and tapped a button in the app. While my son hasn't done any online shopping yet, he managed to turn off my wife's desktop computer by crawling over and hitting the power button. You can't put the toddler genie back in the bottle, but you can take steps to protect your gear from the hands and mind of a preschool pillager. ?Here are six ways to toddler-proof your gadgets.

    Disable the Power Button

Whether you have a laptop that lives on your desk or a desktop tower that sits on the floor, it's easy for your little one to press the power button. Before you know it, your PC's shutting down and you're losing unsaved work. In Windows 7, 8 or 8.1, you can disable the power button by selectiong Power Option in the Windows control panel. Then click "Choose wht the power buttons do" and select "Do Nothing" next to the power button option.

Mac OS X doesn't have power button disabling built in, but a third-party application called PowerBlock allows you to customize what the power button does. However, you must have a working knowlege of AppleScript.

More: 12 Worst Android Annoyances and How to Fix Them

    Use a Power Strip Cover

Even if your power button is disabled, your child can still turn off your computer by flipping a switch on your power strip or pulling out a wire. He can also electrocute himself that way, damaging a lot more than just your data. Fortunately, products like the Safety 1st Power Strip Cover or Mommy's Helpder Power Strip Safety Cover can over over all the outlets and the switch. For under $10, this is probably one of the best investments you can make.

More: 8 Worst Windows 8 Annoyances and How to Fix Them

Set a PIN or a Password on All Your Devices

Those children may be part of your family, but when it comes to your gadgets, you must treat them like pick pockets in a subway station. If a thief grabs your Galaxy S4, you'll want it to be locked so that he can't get in and start reading your email or accessing your online banking tools. By the same token, you should set a password on all your devices-- from your tablet to your desktop PC--even if they never leave your home.

Use a strong password or long PIN rather than an unlock pattern, because even a 1-year-old can guess that. To enable password protection on an Android device, go to settings->Security->Lock Screen and select Password or PIN. On iOS devices, tap Settings>General>Passcode Lock. You can then choose a simple PIN or longer passcode.

Don't forget to lock your devices as soon as you walk away from them. On phones and tablets, you can usually lock by hitting the power button. In Windows, Window key + L will force the next person who touches the machine to log in.

    Sign Out of Shopping Services

It's easy to understand why a toddler in Oregon was able to bid for a car and win using the eBay app on her father's phone. Unfortunately, eBay for mobile keeps you signed in to your account, even after you close the app and re-open it. Amazon does the same, meaning that your toddler could accidentally ordering anything, including a $153,000 pet hair dryer, without your knowledge

You can protect your shopping accounts on mobile by actively signing out when you are done and, in the case of eBay, by making sure that your PayPal account doesn't have the "Keep me Signed In" box checked.

More: 10 Worst Tech Rip-Offs and How to Avoid Them

    Use a Rugged Case

Even though I keep a password on my phone, there's still plenty of opportunity for my son to destroy it. Any time I put the phone down on a table or lay it down next to me on the couch, he can run over, grab it, and start banging it against the wood floor, just to see what kind of sound it makes.

Fortunately, there are many rugged phone and tablet cases that can take a licking and keep on ticking. Lifeproof, Ballistic and Otterbox all make extremely sturdy cases that can withstand a serious fall or even a dunking. For example, the $80 Ballistic Hydra case for the iPhone 5 can survive an 8-foot drop or 30 minutes under water.

    Set Up Parental Controls

If you are going to let your child use your smartphone, tablet or laptop, you'll want to enable parental controls so that he doesn't open applications or visits sites you wouldn't want him to see. Every operating system has different child-protection options. In iOS, you can find the restrictions menu under Settings->General. On Android, you may prefer to install a child-friendly environment such as Kytephone, which only shows certain apps.

Windows 8 and 8.1 allow you to create restricted child accounts, and Windows Phone has a special Kids Corner environment that houses only apps you approve. Both Amazon Kindle Fire and Nook HD tablets also provide restricted modes for kids. Amazon's Kindle FreeTime feature lets you select appropriate content and apps, as well as set usage time limits for your child.

WVU Football: JUCO Defensive End Commit Dontrill Hyman Enrolled

The Mountaineers continue to wrap up the 2013 class of recruits as talented JUCO defensive end Dontrill Hyman graduates from Hinds Community College in Raymond, Mississippi. The 6?5?- 265 lbs. Hyman runs an official 4.7 in the 40 and is a welcome addition to a rebuilding defense.

Hyman was originally recruited to East Carolina by now WVU secondary coach Brian Mitchell from Warsaw, N.C., where he attended Kenan High School. He enrolled at Hinds CC when he did not meet NCAA initial qualifying standards. During the past season at Hinds, Hyman made 61 tackles, 7.5 sacks and 4.4 tackles for losses. He also added three forced fumbles and a blocked kick to round out his impressive totals.

Coach Mitchell stayed in touch with him and managed to flip Hyman after being hired by WVU early this year. Some were beginning to worry if Dontrill would make it before fall classes, but he received his letter of acceptance from WVU today.

Dontrill?s combination of size and speed will allow him to compete for playing time this fall as the Mountaineers attempt to build a strong pass rush. That was one of the problems with the beleaguered defense last year in addition to a porous secondary.

Hopefully, Dontrill Hyman may be one of the answers.

As always, comments or debate welcome and appreciated.?

Obama: US makes no apology for Africa efforts

(AP) ? President Barack Obama says the United States makes no apology for supporting efforts to stand up for human dignity in Africa.

Obama says fear too often prevails in nations across Africa. He's citing Muslim nations like Mali and Somalia and says too often terrorism perverts the meaning of Islam.

Obama says the American military presence in Africa is focused on putting muscle behind African efforts. He says as the U.S. can't stop tragedies alone, but if Africans step forward and lead, the U.S. can help.

He says as long as parts of Africa are ravaged by war, democracy and economic opportunity can't take hold.

Obama's comments came at the University of Cape Town during the flagship speech of his trip to South Africa.

    June 30, 2013

topline-game-labs-zynga-gigamediaTaiwan-based online gaming outfit GigaMedia is preparing to dive deep into the social casino space in a bid to boost growth of its FunTown online game brand. GigaMedia CEO Collin Hwang said the company is presently conducting closed beta testing on a new suite of in-house social slots, poker and dice games at over 200 internet cafes in Taiwan, with a commercial release expected by the end of July.

Hwang said the plan was to ?leverage our expertise as a developer and operator of PC-based Asian casino games to create new offerings for mobile and tablet devices? targeting ?the highest-spending social gamers in the world?s largest mobile games market.? As part of its plan for Asian social casino dominance, GigaMedia is also ?reviewing potential strategic partnerships and acquisitions.?

GigaMedia used to own Everest Gaming, but sold 60% of the business in 2009 to BetClic, which assumed the remaining stake last year. Gigamedia has undergone a sweeping restructuring over the past few years, enduring nearly three years of red ink before finally turning a profit in Q3 2012. Hwang is GigaMedia?s fourth CEO in two years.

Cantor Ventures has announced it will invest $25m in TopLine Game Labs, which will enable the California-based developer to enter the fantasy sports and social gaming market. Cantor Ventures is an offshoot of Wall Street investment outfit Cantor Fitzgerald, which also counts Nevada sportsbook operator Cantor Gaming among its holdings. TopLine is run by Yahoo! Sports? former head of fantasy sports David Geller, who says the Cantor cash will help build a ?robust platform to power exciting new sports- and entertainment-based social games.? While TopLine has espoused a ?mobile-first? approach, Geller says the team is ?committed to building a platform agnostic architecture.?

    By Isla Binnie

PILTON, England (Reuters) - An octogenarian entertainer and a veteran country music singer had fans of all tastes and ages roaring on the final afternoon of the Glastonbury music festival on Sunday.

The sun beat down on the sprawling 900 acre farm in southwest England that this year showcased the Rolling Stones and Arctic Monkeys and features British folk rockers Mumford & Sons on Sunday, playing to up to 150,000 music fans.

Glastonbury organiser Michael Eavis is known for bringing eclectic and surprising acts to the venue, which this year has 2,000 acts performing across 58 stages.

In the lead-up to Sunday's headline slot, crowds flocked to see 85-year-old British TV presenter and all-round entertainer Bruce Forsyth or country music's Kenny Rogers.

"It's not usually my bag but he's great," said Kevin Watt, a 32 year-old computer games tester, as he watched Rogers play hits including "We've Got Tonight" and "Ruby, Don't Take Your Love to Town".

The average age of ticket buyers has gone up to 36 since Eavis first invited 1,500 hippies to a festival on his farm in 1970, and the lineup reflects the range of ages.

Forsyth said: "I'll try to do a programme that will suit every one of you," before impersonating Rolling Stones frontman Mick Jagger to chants of "We love you, Bruce!" from the crowd.

"I grew up with Bruce Forsyth," said Jane Douglass, 50, a dance teacher from Buckinghamshire. "He was in my living room every Saturday night when I was growing up and now he's in the living room every Saturday night for my kids."

It is the first time that Mumford & Sons will headline at the world's best known music festival and it marks their return to the stage after bassist Ted Dwane underwent emergency surgery for a blood clot on the brain this month.

"After our set, I will make my annual trip up to the stone circle where I hope to kick back, reflect on the weekend and maybe even catch the sunrise," wrote keyboard player Ben Lovett on the band's website.

The main headline act was the Rolling Stones who played on Saturday to more than 100,000 fans, in a two and a quarter-hour Glastonbury debut topped with fireworks.

Festival organizers said the event had run smoothly despite rain on the first day temporarily turning the site into a mudpit and proving too much for British rapper Wiley who headed home, complaining about the weather, before his Saturday slot.

But the rain stopped on Friday and festival-goers dispensed with their waterproofs.

A team of about 300 police were on duty at the site but reported a 30 percent drop in crime since the last Glastonbury festival held in 2011.
