Delhi gang-rape: bus driver refuses identification parade, remanded to five days' police custody

Photo of Ram Singh, the driver of the bus

New Delhi:?The main accused in the gang-rape of a medical student in Delhi on Sunday, bus driver Ram Singh has refused to undergo a test identification parade, which now forces the police to base its case against him and his co-accused on forensic evidence.

Ram Singh, 30, was produced in a local court today and was remanded to five days in police custody. He was brought to a jam-packed courtroom with his face covered. The bus driver is among four men arrested by the police; two of the accused are on the run.??
?
A test identification parade is a procedure in which the alleged offender is brought before witnesses and victims for identification. It could have been conducted as soon as the victim's male friend - who was with her on Sunday evening and was also beaten up brutally by the six men who allegedly raped the student - was pronounced medically fit to identify the accused. But Ram Singh is allowed by law to refuse such a parade.??
?
The police sought Ram Singh's custody in court as they said they needed to interrogate him to trace the two men yet to be arrested.
?
Apart from trying to trace the clothes the accused were wearing that day for forensic evidence, the police also want to recover the mobile phones and ATM cards of the victim and her male friend, which the assailants allegedly took away with them.
?
The police said that while in their custody, Ram Singh will be taken to Rajasthan, Bihar and eastern Uttar Pradesh to help arrest the two men absconding.

Ram Singh was the first to be arrested in the case last evening. The three others arrested are expected to be produced in court tomorrow.???
?
On Sunday evening, police said, Ram Singh, his brother Mukesh and four other friends took the chartered bus he drove as a school bus, for a "joy ride".

They spotted the student and her friend at the Munirka bus stop in south Delhi and called out to them saying the bus was headed to Dwarka, where the woman lives, the police said.
?
Inside the bus they reportedly first taunted the two for being out together in the night and then assaulted them. When the woman fought back, police sources say, the six men "decided to teach her a lesson." They dragged her to the back of the moving bus and repeatedly raped her and punched her in the stomach.?

They also beat her friend with an iron rod. After almost an hour of the torture, they allegedly threw the two out of the bus, stripped of much of their clothing, on a flyover.

They were found unconscious there and were taken to hospital by the police, where the woman has undergone multiple surgeries and is now on ventilator support with what doctors have described as "irreparable damage" to her abdomen and intestines.

The Case for Holding Gold Even When Investors ... - Yahoo! Finance

It's known as a counter-intuitive flight to safety, and it happens when investors, illogically, seek safety in the very asset that they are worried about. A recent example of this upside-down instinct is when investors flocked to Treasuries two summers ago amidst a broader market panic that was occurring when U.S. debt had just lost the AAA credit rating.

Another more timely example is the dollar trade, which has investors seeking the safety of the U.S. currency as they try to shield themselves from the risk of fiscal mismanagement by the U.S. government.

This demand-for-dollars scenario is one reason why investors in commodities, particularly precious metals, are in a funk over what to do about the future.

For Tom Lydon, editor of ETF Trends, the answer is to ride out any short-term volatility that might be triggered by a stronger dollar and embrace the broader trends of dollar debasement, the fiscal cliff, and more easing by the Fed.

''I think gold probably has more things going for it than not at this point," Lydon says in the attached video. "We're all asking, 'what do I do?' but there are a lot of investors out there who haven't invested in gold, who haven't diversified yet. I think they're going to step forward and say, if 'I haven't done it, maybe now is a good time to do it.'"

While he continues to recommend shares of the SPDR Gold Shares (GLD), he's currently more drawn to the miners and sees even better opportunities in funds like the Market Vectors Gold Miners ETF (GDX) and the basket of smaller players found in the Market Vectors Junior Gold Miners (GDXJ). In addition, Lydon says the miners "haven't done anything in five years at a time when gold has doubled," adding that they also sport a single-digit forward P/E.

"Right now gold miners really are a value bet," he concludes.

Is Kerry now a lock for secretary of state?

So, it's official: Ambassador Susan Rice will not?be Secretary of State ? she's withdrawn and President Obama has accepted, and John McCain is twisting his face in pleasure somewhere. Which means... John Kerry, right? Well, yes, probably ? all the conservatives just love him now. But speculation also puts some other options in front of the president between now and whenever Hillary Clinton steps down ? including, but not limited to, her husband.

RELATED: Susan Rice Edges One Step Closer to Getting Hillary Clinton's Job

The Long Shot

Name: Richard Berman

RELATED: John Kerry Wants Hillary Clinton's Job

Credentials: 15 terms in Congress; served on important security committees; reputation for being discreet.?

RELATED: Huntsman: The Candidate Who Couldn't

Source of Speculation: A bunch of people talking about it to reporters. But not in a "we hear that Obama's thinking..." kind of way. Berman just lost re-election after his district in California was re-zoned, and the guy who beat him said he thought he might be good for the job???and so it went from there.?

RELATED: Why You Shouldn't Trust Gadget Rumors

Likelihood of Actually Getting It: Slim. Berman doesn't even have the kind of national profile necessary for such an international job, and no White House officials are leaking his name. It's all good-will consolation prize quotes from his teammates after he just lost his job.?

RELATED: John Kerry, Organic Food, and the Hair of Dorian Gray

The Really?Long Shot

Name: Bill Clinton

Credentials: Served two terms as President; former Gov. of Arkansas; is insanely popular; Obama owes him a favor for helping to save his campaign with his legendary, mostly-improvised convention speech.?

Source of Speculation: Joe Nocera thinks it's a good idea, and a New York Post report from June said Clinton might be angling for the Secretary of State job under a potential Ander Cuomo Presidency if Hillary does decide not to run in 2016. "I think everyone who knows Bill Clinton knows he'd love to be secretary of state because he's so smart and because he knows so much about the world," an 'insider' told the Post.

Likelihood of Actually Getting It: Dream on.

The Fool-Me-Twice Shot

Name: Jon Huntsman

Credentials: Former Utah Gov, former Ambassador to China and Singapore, former Republican presidential candidate.?

Source of Speculation: An Associated Press report?that said "officials" were looking at him for the job.?

Likelihood of Actually Getting It: Slim, for different reasons. Namely that he'd probably never accept the appointment. Huntsman was the Republican Obama's team was most scared of?in the last election, and the President named him his Ambassador to China, so it's clear Obama thinks highly of him. But Huntsman has dreams of potentially running for the Big Job again, potentially against Hillary in 2016, and this would make it pretty hard ? if not impossible ? to get Republican support for that.?

The Safe Bet

Name: William Burns

Credentials: Current Deputy Secretary of State.

Source of Speculation: The same report that named Huntsman as a candidate.?

Likelihood of Actually Getting It: Good, if not great. He's Hillary's current number two, and he's getting good buzz with "insiders," apparently. The report that floated his name left things a bit unspectacular, though. Burns, "is a career diplomat who has no political baggage and would be unlikely to stir significant opposition among lawmakers." So, basically, he's an unsexy pick that wouldn't garner any headlines.?

The Safest Bet

Name: John Kerry

Credentials: He's getting it.?

Source of Speculation: He's getting it.

Likelihood of Actually Getting It: Guys, it's going to be Kerry. Just stop.?

Does Social Media Play an Important Part in Retirement Planning ...

3 years ago I would have told you that social media doesn?t have a role in how we manage our finances. ?But then again, I didn?t really understand the purpose and value of blogs. ?Today, as a personal finance blogger, I believe blogs, Twitter, Facebook and other avenues of social media play an important part in helping us learn about personal finance and make better decisions with our money.

Using Social Media to Gain Knowledge

My social Network on Flickr, Facebook, Twitter and MyblogLogSocial Media Today provided a recent piece on this topic and shared how peers greatly influence retirement planning decisions. ?Here?s how:

While chatting with their peers, friends, relatives and acquaintances, people gain tremendous knowledge about what other?s are doing in their lives. For instance, social media helps you to know where people in your network are working, where they are traveling, what are they buying and where they are investing and even how they are planning for their retirement

One Size Fits All Does Not Work

But don?t get carried away and jump on Twitter to start planning your retirement, following your peer?s investing strategy and so on. What works for them, doesn?t necessary mean it?s going to work for your situation.

Experts caution people against being led by peer group mentality. This is because when it comes to investing, one-size-fits-all approach does not work. It is therefore advisable that you?set your own retirement goals?when planning how much percentage of your salary you must save and where you must invest.

Ideas to Use Social Media for Your Finances

And that?s the key: ?set your own goals when planning. ?Use social media to gather information, learn from others? experiences, but plan your way based on your situation and what you believe is going work for you.

So, what are some practical ways to use social media to help? ?Here area few ways I use social media that might help:

  • Follow personal finance bloggers and see what they?re writing about. ?Some write about there own experiences which can help you learn from mistakes or gather good ideas to apply to your situation.
  • Pay attention to people with influence on Twitter. ?You might start by following well-known people like Dave Ramsey who often shares tips and links to articles. ?Also follow bloggers (such as me @onemoneydesign). ?Bloggers often share articles they read and find interesting and helpful
  • Save articles you like to websites such as Instapaper to build an archive you can revisit and use to answer your questions as they come up
  • Pay attention to media sites such as Kiplinger, YahooFinance, and others to see what is trending and get the latest information on finance. ?You can follow their RSS feeds using Google Reader and stay up to date on what they?re publishing

These are just a few ideas I use regularly. ?I love to read personal finance blogs to learn from others. ?The best blogs, in my opinion, are the ones sharing practical tips, links to helpful articles and their personal experience (good and bad).

Do you think social media plays an important role in retirement planning and other areas of personal finance?

Ancient red dye powers new 'green' battery

Wednesday, December 12, 2012

Rose madder ? a natural plant dye once prized throughout the Old World to make fiery red textiles ? has found a second life as the basis for a new "green" battery.

Chemists from The City College of New York teamed with researchers from Rice University and the U.S. Army Research Laboratory to develop a non-toxic and sustainable lithium-ion battery powered by purpurin, a dye extracted from the roots of the madder plant (Rubia species).

More than 3500 years ago, civilizations in Asia and the Middle East first boiled madder roots to color fabrics in vivid oranges, reds and pinks. In its latest technological incarnation, the climbing herb could lay the foundation for an eco-friendly alternative to traditional lithium-ion (Li-ion) batteries. These batteries charge everything from your mobile phone to electric vehicles, but carry with them risks to the environment during production, recycling and disposal.

"Purpurin," on the other hand, said team member and City College Professor of Chemistry George John, "comes from nature and it will go back to nature." The team reports their results in the journal Nature's online and open access publication, Scientific Reports, on December 11, 2012.

Most Li-ion batteries today rely on finite supplies of mined metal ores, such as cobalt. "Thirty percent of globally produced cobalt is fed into battery technology," noted Dr. Leela Reddy, lead author and a research scientist in Professor Ajayan's lab in the Department of Mechanical Engineering and Material Science at Rice University. The cobalt salt and lithium are combined at high temperatures to make a battery's cathode, the electrode through which the electric current flows.

Mining cobalt metal and transforming it, however, is expensive, he explained. Fabricating and recycling standard Li-ion batteries demands high temperatures, guzzling costly energy, especially during recycling. "In 2010, almost 10 billion lithium-ion batteries had to be recycled," said Dr. Reddy.

Production and recycling also pumps an estimated 72 kilograms of carbon dioxide ? a greenhouse gas ? into the atmosphere for every kilowatt-hour of energy in a Li-ion battery, he noted. These grim facts have fed a surging demand to develop green batteries, said Dr. Reddy.

Fortunately, biologically based color molecules, like purpurin and its relatives, seem pre-adapted to act as a battery's electrode. In the case of purpurin, the molecule's six-membered (aromatic) rings are festooned with carbonyl and hydroxyl groups adept at passing electrons back and forth, just as traditional electrodes do. "These aromatic systems are electron-rich molecules that easily coordinate with lithium," explained Professor John.

Moreover, growing madder or other biomass crops to make batteries would soak up carbon dioxide and eliminate the disposal problem ? without its toxic components, a lithium-ion battery could be thrown away.

Best of all, purpurin also turns out to be a no-fuss ingredient. "In the literature there are one or two other natural organic molecules in development for batteries, but the process to make them is much more tedious and complicated," noted Professor John.

Made and stored at room temperature, the purpurin electrode is made in just a few easy steps: dissolve the purpurin in an alcohol solvent and add lithium salt. When the salt's lithium ion binds with purpurin the solution turns from reddish yellow to pink. "The chemistry is quite simple," coauthor and City College postdoctoral researcher Dr. Nagarajan explained.

The team estimates that a commercial green Li-ion battery may be only a few years away, counting the time needed to ramp up purpurin's efficiency or hunt down and synthesize similar molecules. "We can say it is definitely going to happen, and sometime soon, because in this case we are fully aware of the mechanism," said Professor John.

"When you can generate something new or unheard of, you think of chemistry in a different way," he added. "That a natural material or dye can be used for a battery, that is exciting, even for me."

Huge Asteroid to Pass Earth Tonight: How to Watch Online

A giant asteroid will make a flyby of Earth over the next few days, and armchair astronomers can watch the action live on their computers.

The near-Earth asteroid 4179 Toutatis, which is about 3 miles (5 kilometers) wide, will zoom within 4.3 million miles (7 million kilometers) of Earth during its closest approach early Wednesday morning (Dec. 12). That's too far away to pose any impact threat on this pass, but close enough to put on a pretty good show through top-notch telescopes, researchers say.

And some of those scopes will be tracking Toutatis' movements for the benefit of skywatchers around the world. The online Slooh Space Camera and Virtual Telescope Project, for example, will both stream live, free footage of the asteroid from professional-quality observatories.

Slooh will webcast Toutatis views from a scope in the Canary Islands off the west coast of Africa beginning at 3 p.m. EST (2000 GMT) today (Dec. 11). Another show will follow at 10 p.m. EST tonight (0300 GMT Wednesday), with footage from an instrument in Arizona. You can watch them at Slooh's website: http://www.slooh.com.

Both shows will feature commentary from Slooh president Patrick Paolucci and Astronomy Magazine columnist Bob Berman. [Photos: Asteroids in Deep Space]

"Slooh technical staff will let the public follow this fast-moving asteroid in two different ways. In one view, the background stars will be tracked at their own rate and the asteroid will appear as an obvious streak or a moving time-lapse dot across the starry field," Berman said in a statement.

"In a second view, Toutatis itself will be tracked and held steady as a tiny pointlike object, while Earth's spin makes the background stars whiz by as streaks," Berman added. "Both methods will make the asteroid's speedy orbital motion obvious as it passes us in space."

Meanwhile, the Virtual Telescope Project ? which is run by Gianluca Masi of Bellatrix Astronomical Observatory in Italy ? will offer its own free webcast Thursday (Dec. 13) at 3 p.m. EST (2000 GMT), complete with commentary from astrophysicists.

You can see that video stream here: http://www.virtualtelescope.eu/webtv/

Asteroid Toutatis was first viewed in 1934, then officially discovered in 1989. It makes one trip around the sun every four years.

The Minor Planet Center in Cambridge, Mass., lists Toutatis as a potentially hazardous object, meaning that it could pose a threat to our planet at some point in the future. The current flyby is no cause for concern, however. At its closest approach, which comes at 1:40 a.m. (0640 GMT) Wednesday, Toutatis will still be 18 times farther away from Earth than the moon is.

Toutatis would cause catastrophic damage if it ever did slam into Earth. In general, scientists think a strike by anything at least 0.6 miles (1 km) wide could have global consequences, most likely by altering the world's climate for many years to come.

For comparison, the asteroid thought to have wiped out the dinosaurs 65 million years ago was an estimated 6 miles (10 km) across.

(AP) ? Egypt's opposition says it will keep up protests against a referendum on a disputed draft constitution but has stopped short of advocating either a boycott or a "no" less than a week before voting.

The opposition was still pushing Sunday for Islamist President Mohammed Morsi to cancel the Dec. 15 referendum, saying they reject the process entirely.

The referendum plan has sparked some of the bloodiest clashes between Morsi supporters and opponents since he came to power in June.

The National Salvation Front, an umbrella opposition group of liberal and leftist parties, warned that holding the referendum in such atmosphere will lead to more strife. It called for another massive rally on Tuesday.

It accused Morsi of driving the country toward violent clashes.
