Living Without Time [Stress]

Living Without TimeEarlier this year, Twitpic CEO Steven Corona spent 30 days without social media. Now, he's given up time. That's right?no clocks, no watches, nothing digital. He shares what life is like with the sun as his guide.

Time. When broken down into minutes, hours, days, such small units over a lifetime, they don't really seem to exist. It's almost like a reality that we all subscribe to?existing only because we agreed it should. On the other hand, time is always marching forward. Infinite. Abrupt when divided into years, decades, centuries.

The only unit of time that matters is heartbeats. Even if the world were totally silent, even in a dark room covered in five layers of foam, you'd be able to count your own heartbeats. (Paul Ford, 10 Timeframes)

The smallest units, insignificant over a lifetime, are also the most stressful. The most frustrating. I was sick of it.

I unsubscribed to the clock

I dropped my watch right into the garbage. Shut off the glowing green-blue digital clocks that seem to piggyback on every appliance known to man?microwave, stove, VCR. The one in the corner of my computer screen? Gone. On my iPhone, I changed it to a random timezone so, technically, it still has a clock, but at quick glance? Almost useless.

The effects were immediate. The first few days were so confusing. I worked on my laptop all day, totally devoured and consumed by creating things. I had no idea whether it was 11 AM or 7 PM, and didn't care?it was beautiful! I was able to really lose myself in a project without having a clock to constantly distract.

I learned how to read the sun?a skill that adapted on its own, so it was surprising when I caught myself turning to the window to figure out if I was done working for the day. I've tested myself and I'm pretty accurate, even with the season change.

Three months later

Though I've gotten used to the mental freedom, three months into it, the bigger changes are still sticking around. I'm less stressed. I don't worry about how long things take or even bother considering how long they should take. Over a lifetime, an extra couple of minutes here or there is a rounding error and a worthy price to pay for the benefits.

I'm no longer chained to the clock. I measure my life in heartbeats and years, the only significant units to me.

Full disclosure: I used the calendar on my phone to notify me before an appointment.

Zuckerberg: betting on HTML 5 for Facebook mobile app was a 'mistake,' native Android version on the way

Remember the days before Facebook's iOS app ditched HTML 5 and sped things up with some native code? It turns out that there's some regret in Menlo Park about relying on the web markup language. Betting on HTML 5 for the app is "one of the biggest mistakes if not the biggest strategic mistakes we've ever made," Mark Zuckerberg said in an interview at TechCrunch Disrupt today. The firm's CEO also mentioned that new features will be making their way to the app and a snappier Android version is coming down the pike "when it's done."

Study: Placebo or not, acupuncture helps with pain

CHICAGO (AP) ? Acupuncture gets a thumbs-up for helping relieve pain from chronic headaches, backaches and arthritis in a review of more than two dozen studies ? the latest analysis of an often-studied therapy that has as many fans as critics.

Some believe its only powers are a psychological, placebo effect. But some doctors believe even if that's the explanation for acupuncture's effectiveness, there's no reason not to offer it if it makes people feel better.

The new analysis examined 29 studies involving almost 18,000 adults. The researchers concluded that the needle remedy worked better than usual pain treatment and slightly better than fake acupuncture. That kind of analysis is not the strongest type of research, but the authors took extra steps including examining raw data from the original studies.

The results "provide the most robust evidence to date that acupuncture is a reasonable referral option," wrote the authors, who include researchers with Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York and several universities in England and Germany.

Their study isn't proof, but it adds to evidence that acupuncture may benefit a range of conditions.

The new analysis was published online Monday in Archives of Internal Medicine. The federal government's National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine paid for most of the study, along with a small grant from the Samueli Institute, a nonprofit group that supports research on alternative healing.

Acupuncture's use has become more mainstream. The military has used it to help treat pain from war wounds, and California recently passed legislation that would include acupuncture among treatments recommended for coverage under provisions of the nation's new health care law. That law requires insurance plans to cover certain categories of benefits starting in 2014. Deciding specifics is being left up to the states.

Some private insurance plans already cover acupuncture; Medicare does not.

In traditional Chinese medicine, acupuncture involves inserting long, very thin needles just beneath the skin's surface at specific points on the body to control pain or stress. Several weekly sessions are usually involved, typically costing about $60 to $100 per session. Fake acupuncture studied in research sometimes also uses needles, but on different areas of the body.

Scientists aren't sure what biological mechanism could explain how acupuncture might relieve pain, but the authors of the new study say the results suggest there's more involved than just a placebo effect.

Acupuncture skeptic Dr. Stephen Barrett said the study results are dubious. The retired psychiatrist runs Quackwatch, a Web site on medical scams, and says studies of acupuncture often involve strict research conditions that don't mirror how the procedure is used in the real world.

The new analysis combined results from studies of patients with common types of chronic pain ? recurring headaches, arthritis or back, neck and shoulder. The studies had randomly assigned patients to acupuncture and either fake acupuncture or standard pain treatment including medication or physical therapy.

The authors explained their statistical findings by using a pain scale of 0 to 100: The patients' average baseline pain measured 60; it dropped to 30 on average in those who got acupuncture, 35 in those who got fake acupuncture, and 43 in the usual treatment group.

While the difference in results for real versus fake acupuncture was small, it suggests acupuncture could have more than a psychological effect, said lead author Andrew Vickers, a cancer researcher at Memorial Sloan-Kettering. The center offers acupuncture and other alternative therapies for cancer patients with hard-to-treat pain.

The analysis was more rigorous than most research based on pooling previous studies' results, because the authors obtained original data from each study. That makes the conclusion more robust, said Dr. Andrew Avins, author of an Archives commentary and a physician and researcher with the University of California at San Francisco and Kaiser-Permanente.

Acupuncture is relatively safe and uncertainty over how it works shouldn't stop doctors from offering it as an option for patients struggling with pain, Avins said.

"Perhaps a more productive strategy at this point would be to provide whatever benefits we can for our patients, while we continue to explore more carefully all mechanisms of healing," he wrote.

Rihanna Gets New Tattoo Under Breasts to Honor Grandmother

Rihanna has paid tribute to her late grandmother, who passed away in July after a lengthy battle with cancer, with a mammoth tattoo under her boobs.

Fresh off MTV VMA appearance, which saw her kiss Chris Brown and (maybe) call Drake an a$$hole, Rih revealed the new ink to fans on Instagram.

The pop superstar wrote: "Goddess Isis - Complete Woman - Model for future generations - #GRANGRANDOLLY - always in and on my heart #1love"

Rihanna Isis Tattoo

The tattoo depicts Egyptian goddess of rebirth Isis, throne-shaped headdress and all, down on one knee with her wings unfurled under the singer's breasts.

Isis, appropriately, is considered a symbol of empowered femininity.

Ciara "Dolly" Brathwaite, Rihanna's grandmother, died of cancer this summer, resulting in an outpouring of support from fans and Twitter photo tributes from the star.

Her latest tribute ensures Dolly's memory will be with her forever.

What do you think of Rihanna's latest tat?

Curly's Pub Restaurant Review in Green Bay, Wisconsin

Since the Packer football season is officially in progress, it put me in the mood to dine at Curly's Pub in the Packer's own Lambeau Field, located in Ashwaubenon on the Western border of Green Bay. Curly's is named in honor of Pro Football Hall of fame player, Earl "Curly" Lambeau, who co-founded the Green Bay Packers in 1919 and spent the next 30 years of his life as a Green Bay Packer player and coach. People from all over the country come to tour Lambeau Field and to dine at Curly's. There is a pub / dining side and just a dining side to the restaurant; I decided to eat in the pub/dining side. Curly's interior contains a huge bar, a wall of massive picture windows overlooking the Packer's parking lot and 36 flat screen TVs not including 8 out in front of the hallway. Those TVs were just the ones I counted in the bar / dining area. The restaurant also has a lot of detail with wood and ceramic tile flooring, black iron arches, many wonderful restored era pictures of the Packers from their beginnings, pool tables with a large letter G on top and adjacent is an enclosed large game room with some unique games for adults and children. The young children looked like they were having a blast.

My server came and brought me a menu and took my drink order. The menu is what you would expect in a sports bar; most items were not on the light side, even including the salads. Nearly all of the salads consisted of bacon, cheese and heavier creamed dressings. I ordered the Curly's burger with waffle fries for $8.95. While I was waiting, all the TV channels were airing a baseball game and the volume was set on very loud. My hamburger was brought out and it was a huge burger with heaping mounds of waffle fries. Set to the side was a pickle spear, slice of raw red onion, tomato, a lettuce leaf and a 2oz. side of coleslaw. I asked the server if I could have fried onions and she said no problem. She returned with battered fried onions that had been made already. My hamburger was set on a large pretzel bun; with the quality of the bun was not the best. The hamburger was a thick round patty with a slight charcoal flavor and it tasted good. The waffle fries were very heavy and greasy, and the coleslaw tasted like stale refrigerator with a less than mediocre bottled mixed dressing on it. My service throughout the meal was standard service. Curly's offers more quantity than quality with a fun Green Bay Packer themed atmosphere.
